Metro Transit’s successful first-mile/last-mile transit service, Via Metro STL, is celebrating its two-year anniversary this month with sky-high ridership. This service supplements Metro Transit service by extending the reach of the system to better connect you to your destinations. The service provides shared rides for $2 to all residents, workers, and visitors. Riders can hail a Via Metro STL vehicle directly from their smartphone with the Via app when they need it, no schedules required.

Since launching in June 2020, Via Metro STL has completed more than 80,000 rides, and provided close to 10,000 rides in the month of May alone. Via Metro STL has seen steady ridership growth since its launch, including a 42% percent increase since early March 2022. Service is now available in three zones:

Take a test drive with Via Metro STL

To celebrate the 2-year anniversary, we are offering two free rides during the month of July for new and existing riders. Simply open the app and your two free rides will be there!

Recent rider survey results and data demonstrates how Via Metro STL is expanding access to affordable, equitable transportation in St. Louis County:

  • Nearly 80% of riders’ annual household income is less than $50k, and 17% of riders report they wouldn’t have made a trip if Via Metro STL wasn’t an option. Many riders say “it’s the only source of transportation” they have.
  • 87% of survey respondents shared that they do not own a personal vehicle. The majority of riders use Via Metro STL to commute to/from work, while 50% depend on the service to take care of daily errands like accessing medical care and schools.
  • 59% of riders report having shorter travel times than before Via Metro STL. Riders often share their appreciation for “very direct routing.”

The service’s ultimate goal is to improve transportation accessibility through filling first-and-last mile transit gaps and expanding residents’ access to essential destinations. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) are also available for Via Metro STL riders.

Via Metro STL was recently named a “Leader in Equity-focused Transit Expansion” in the 2022 Via Impact Awards, which recognize cities and transit agencies who have leveraged tech and innovation to deliver exceptional service to their communities. Metro Transit is one of three transit agencies or cities that has been recognized with this award to-date, out of Via’s 500+ global partners.

  • Request a ride. Enter your pickup and drop-off addresses and choose the ride option that works for you.

Here’s What Riders Are Saying

  • “I am able to get where I need, at a cost I can actually afford.”
  • “There aren’t buses where I live, so I would have to walk 6 miles to get on a bus to get to work 20 miles away. It saves me a lot of walking. I don’t think I would keep my job without it.”
  • “[The service] is reliable and gets me to transfer points…there isn’t a bunch of stopping; [the route] is direct – it just makes things more convenient.”
  • “Via STL Metro helps me get to appointments that I couldn’t have gotten to otherwise.”

Transportation is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution. In conjunction with the start of the St. Louis Regional Clean Air Partnership’s daily air quality forecasting season, we are partnering with local organizations to launch “Don’t Pollute. Switch Up Your Commute.” — a campaign aimed at providing resources and incentives for ditching your single-occupancy vehicle.

This summer-long effort will work to inform the community about how the way you choose to travel impacts the quality of the air we breathe, as well as motivate you to modify commuting behaviors as often as you are able.

“The St. Louis region is no stranger to poor air quality conditions,” said Susannah Fuchs, Director of Clean Air for the American Lung Association in Missouri. “There is a lot of work to be done to protect our local communities from the continued risks to public health resulting from high levels of ozone, particularly during the summer months. It’s very important that area residents stay informed about the quality of the air we breathe and continue to take voluntary steps to reduce emissions to help improve outcomes.”

Visit SwitchUpYourCommute.com to download the color-coded air quality forecast, which provides daily updates via email or text stating if the forecast for the following day is a GREEN (good), YELLOW (moderate), ORANGE (unhealthy for sensitive groups) or RED (unhealthy) air quality day. The first 200 people to download the forecast will receive a free, STL-STYLE campaign t-shirt. The site also provides detailed information about all transportation options available on both sides of the Mississippi River – and links to schedules, pricing, programs, ride matching services, incentives and more.

We want to see how you are showing you care about clean air this summer. Snap a photo of you taking transit, carpooling, vanpooling, walking, biking or telecommuting and share those pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with #SwitchUpYourCommute.

“The region is in a race for cleaner air and the campaign is two-fold,” added Kimberly Cella, Executive Director for Citizens for Modern Transit. “First, partners aim to educate. Then, as the summer heats up and the potential for poor air quality days to be forecasted increases, we want people to take action.”

When an ORANGE or RED air quality day is forecasted, those who have registered for the daily air quality forecast will receive a text message asking them if they plan to modify their commute the following day, and if so, how. These respondents – along with those who post a picture of themselves on social media taking transit, carpooling, vanpooling or telecommuting on a poor air quality day with #SwitchUpYourCommute – will be entered to win a variety of prizes through the end of the air quality forecasting season on September 30, 2022.

“In light of rising gas prices, area residents should consider the cost savings with the alternatives. Not only is there savings on day to day gasoline, but also the maintenance costs of vehicles,” added Taulby Roach, President and CEO of Bi-State Development, which operates Metro Transit. “It’s a win-win with cleaner air and fuller wallets!”

Partners behind “Don’t Pollute. Switch Up Your Commute.” include Citizens for Modern Transit, the Clean Air Partnership, Commute with Enterprise, Madison County Transit District, Metro Transit, the Missouri Department of Transportation, RideFinders and St. Clair County Transit District.

Hear from representatives of the partnering organizations in this recent Race for Cleaner Air webinar hosted by CMT to learn more about this summer-long campaign, how you can help, available resources, and next steps.

New canopies and colorful artwork at Emerson Park Transit Center

Metro Transit riders can now experience a colorful, playful and interactive space at the Emerson Park Transit Center while they wait for their bus or MetroLink train.

The previously gray concrete area between the bus bays and MetroLink entrance has been transformed into a new space that boasts a vibrant-colored jazz theme, flowers and greenery, shaded seating, canopies and a mural inspired by design concepts submitted by East St. Louis High School students.

The Transit Stop Transformation project was accomplished with our partners at St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD), Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT), and AARP. A celebration to highlight the completion of the colorful new area was held this weekend (August 21) and featured remarks by several project partners with special recognition for three East St. Louis High School students who helped inspire the vision behind the mural. Transit riders and the public were invited to explore the new space, listen to live music performed by students from East St. Louis High School, and enjoy complimentary Pirtle’s Ice Cream.

The CBB/PGAV team completed the planning and design, Added Dimension, LLC, oversaw community engagement, and the mural was created by Jayvn Solomon of L.O.T.U.S. Labs, with inspiration from East St. Louis High School students Zemerion, Taychelle and Jomari.

This is the second project of its kind in the region. Last summer, CMT led the transformation of a MetroBus Stop in Maplewood, which now features enhanced bus shelters, a public art installation, a hopscotch game, vibrant colors, improved lighting and sightlines, and better access to surrounding green spaces.

Check out the slideshow below to see more photos from the event.

The Gateway Go Card is back this summer, providing people ages 13 to 25 with an easy, reliable and very affordable option to commute to summer jobs, camps, recreational programs, personal and professional development opportunities and other destinations. The program aims to provide mobility and independence to young persons in the St. Louis region, offering a discount of up to 66% to ride MetroLink and MetroBus. The program will run through August 31, 2021.

The Gateway Go program, which launched in 2018, is a partnership with the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, St. Clair County, St. Clair County Transit District, Metro Transit and Bi-State Development.

This year’s program comes with two significant enhancements. It includes an $80 Summer Pass, which will cover unlimited rides on MetroLink and MetroBus through August 31, representing a significant savings from the cost of three regular monthly passes. In addition, for the first time, it includes a variety of mobile passes, conveniently available to Gateway Go participants via the Transit app.

Once you have signed up for a Gateway Go mobile pass, you will be able to access all of the available discounted passes quickly and easily through your mobile devices – no cards needed. The discount given through the mobile pass is accessible exclusively to members of the Gateway Go Card program.

Fares available on mobile for Gateway Go participants include:

  • 3-Month Summer Pass = $80
  • Two-Hour Pass = $1.50 (half fare)
  • MetroLink One-Ride = $1.25 (half fare)
  • MetroBus One-Ride = $0.50 (half fare)

Fares available on the Gateway Go Card, include:

  • 3-Month Summer Pass for $80
  • Cash Value up to $100 to come off as half fare on one-rides or two-hour passes
  • June, July & August 2021 individual Monthly Passes are $39 per month – available only via physical card, not via Transit mobile app

Securing a Gateway Go Card is easy – after you provide proof of age using a driver’s license, birth certificate, state ID, school ID or passport, you will be able to take advantage of discounts to ride MetroLink and MetroBus routes on the entire Metro Transit system. To sign up for a Gateway Go mobile pass, visit metrostlouis.org/gatewaygo. You will need an email address, which is required for a Transit App account through which the mobile fares will be available. Groups seeking to register multiple people for the Gateway Go program should contact Metro Transit at mygatewaycard@metrostlouis.org or call 314.982.1500 or 618.274.1500.

The Gateway Go Card will also be available at the MetroStore, where staff will be available to help you navigate your journey on the transit system. The MetroStore is located at 801 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis (by the 8th & Pine MetroLink Station). The store is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
